About Arnold Palmer#

Arnold Daniel Palmer (September 10, 1929 – September 25, 2016) is one of the most influential golfers1 of the 20th century. He was born in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, US2A. He was exposed to golf at a young age at the country club managed by his father and showed great talent. In 1954, he turned professional after graduating from Wake Forest University and officially started his professional career.
Palmer was known as “The King” for his bold and aggressive playing style, friendly image and wide exposure in the early days of television broadcasting. He was a key figure in the professionalization and popularization of golf. He won 62 games on the PGA Tour, including 7 Grand Slam titles, including 4 Masters.
In addition to his athletic achievements, Palmer also made outstanding achievements in promoting the global dissemination of golf, charity and commercial brand building. The Arnold Palmer Foundation and Arnold Palmer Hospital he founded are still in operation today, providing continuous support for social health and education.
Original Work#
The original work of the Arnold Palmer Sculpture is now on display at the Wake Forest University Golf Center in North Carolina, USA. The statue is 9 feet tall (about 2.74 meters), with a total height of 12 feet 9 inches (about 3.89 meters) including the club, and weighs about 1,392 pounds (632 kilograms). The work 3was created by sculptor Bruce Wolfe and officially unveiled on October 18, 2013.

The bronze sculpture shows Palmer’s instantaneous action after completing his classic swing, with his eyes looking far away and his expression focused. The Arnold Palmer Statue adopts a realistic style, emphasizing the restoration of the dynamics of the action and the characteristics of the character. The unveiling day attracted the attention of many attendees and media. After the original work was completed, its design basis was used to make multiple replicas. According to public reports, this includes the sculpture installed at the Bay Hill Club in Florida as a commemorative display of Palmer’s career.
About the Background of The Arnold Palmer Statue#

The sculpture took about a year and a half to make. Bruce Wolfe conducted preliminary research in his studio in northern California and went to Palmer’s hometown club in Latrobe, Pennsylvania to meet with Palmer himself. He referenced more than 100 photos and videos of the game to capture the typical movement characteristics on the course, and designed it based on a classic swing posture during the 1964 Masters Tournament.
Bruce Wolfe first used clay to model the proportion of the figure. Then he made a rubber and plaster mold and sent it to a New York foundry for bronze casting. After the casting was completed, the sculpture went through grinding, surface treatment and splicing. The finished product was transported across the state by heavy trucks to Wake Forest University and unveiled in front of the campus golf center.
Replica work#
Bay Hill Club (Florida)#
The replica sculpture was unveiled in March 2017 at the Bay Hill Club in Orlando, Florida, as part of a major memorial to Arnold Palmer, who owned and operated the club for a long time and used it as his home until his death.
The statue is prominently located in the plaza in front of the club’s main building, and the sculpture is in the same pose as the original at Wake Forest University. The Arnold Palmer Statue is made from the same mold as the original and is cast in bronze. The unveiling ceremony was held before the start of the Arnold Palmer Invitational that year, and was attended by several PGA players, tournament representatives and members of the Palmer family.

Arnold Palmer’s Restaurant (Palm Springs, California)#

In January 2018, a bronze replica of Arnold Palmer was unveiled at the Tradition Golf Club in La Quinta, California. The statue is cast from the same mold as the original at Wake Forest University, is approximately 13 feet tall, and depicts Palmer completing his signature swing. The statue was unveiled during the CareerBuilder Challenge and was attended by Palmer’s grandson, PGA player Sam Saunders, and his longtime friend, former LPGA chairman Charlie Meachem. The Tradition Golf Club was one of Palmer’s main residences in California in his later years. He participated in the design of the club’s course and became a member. The Arnold Palmer Statue is the third memorial statue unveiled within a year and four months of Palmer’s death, following Wake Forest University and Bay Hill Club.
The Creation Process of Arnold Palmer Sculpture#
The Arnold Palmer statue is completed using the traditional lost wax bronze casting process. The entire production process includes the following main steps:
Clay Mold#
First, a full-scale portrait model of Palmer is made using clay to capture his posture, expression and body dynamic details.

Silicone and Plaster Mol#
After the clay model is completed, the craftsman will mold it in sections. To ensure fine portrayal of the head, a soft mold is made of silicone, and the rest of the parts are molded with plaster material to obtain a mold shell that can be used for subsequent wax model manufacturing.

Wax Mold#
Pour the molten wax into the plaster mold and form a complete wax replica model after cooling.

Ceramic Shell#
In order to make the subsequent casting resistant to high temperatures, the wax model is immersed in ceramic slurry and sand powder many times to dry, forming a coating layer, which is repeated many times until a complete ceramic shell is formed.

Bronze Casting#
After the ceramic shell is fired at high temperature, the wax is completely evaporated and flows out, leaving a cavity. Then the molten bronze is poured into the shell to fill the shape structure.

Welding and polishing#
The craftsmen weld and assemble the bronze sections, then grind and polish the surface to remove casting marks and refine details.

Patina and Finishing#
Finally, the sculpture surface is given a predetermined color through chemical treatment, and a protective layer is applied to complete the overall process.
